Choosing A Mattress
Making sure your bed is right for you
Mattress Comfort
Remember when choosing your preferred mattress comfort, firm is not necessarily a good option. You should be aware that the firmer the mattress the higher the pressure on the body - your body’s response is to toss and turn as it attempts to avoid pressure points, especially on the body’s extremities such as hips and shoulders. If you are currently experiencing pain in your hips and shoulders, or the sensation of pins and needles as the blood flow is restricted by the pressure, then you should consider a plusher mattress.
Mattress Material and Construction
There are many differant internal structures and construction methods used in mattresses:
Innerspring - a series of linked springs that provides the support for your body's weight. An example is the
Cloudline Contour Coil range.
Pocket Spring - Each spring is held in a self-contained pocket, which means they can move independantly. Mattresses like the
Cloud Line Pocket are typically much better for couples, as movement on one side of the bed will not affect the other side, meaning both of you can get a great night's sleep.
Premium models of Pocket Spring mattresses like the
Cloud Luxe VRS Pocket come with Variable Rate springs, which have a gentler top half for comfort and a firmer bottom half for support.
Latex - A specialty material, Latex mattresses are perfect for allergy sufferers. Latex has a number of benefits, including moulding to your body shape with body warmth to relieve pressure points, and being naturally anti-microbial and hypoallergenic. Check out the
Cloud Latex range for more details.
Visco-Elastic Foam - A new generation material, also known as "memory foam", a Viscoelastic mattress like the
Cloud Visco will mould to your body’s form, supporting it evenly, rather than having pressure concentrate at the shoulders, hips and feet. This minimisation of pressure points means less tossing and turning, and hence a better night’s sleep. It offers a very differant feel to conventional sprung mattresses.
Premium - Some of the plusher models or special Premium mattresses, will have multiple layers. The
Cloud Luxe Extravagance Grand, for example, has two layers of pocket springs as well as a layer of latex, while the
Cloud Luxe Extravagance Plaza combines two layers of latex foam with variable rate pocket springs. Although they are quite expensive, they will provide a superlative level of comfort, support and quality.
Mattress Size
In this case, bigger is definately better - try for the biggest size mattress that will fit into your bedroom. As children we usually sleep in an single bed, with a width of 92cm (or even 107cm in a king single). As adults with a partner, this area is reduced to 69cm each in a double bed or 77cm each in a queen size bed. It’s not until we get to a king size bed that we experience the breathing space of 92cm each that we were used to as children in our single bed.
Mattress Quality
You’ll spend around one third of your life in bed, so it is wise to purchase the best quality and support possible. Over ten years, a $2000 mattress will cost less than 6 cents a night and keep in mind the durability, comfort and support offered by premium mattresses is an investment in your health and well being.
